Phillips out 3-4 days

Phillips out 3-4 days

PITTSBURGH — Brandon Phillips was hoping the contusion on his forearm, suffered when he was hit by a pitch last night, would only keep him out of the lineup today.

He doesn’t think that will be the case.

“No,” he said when asked if he could play tomorrow. “I can’t even squeeze my hand. Hopefully, it will loosen up. I play through injuries, but I can’t with this. I never knew you needed your forearm so much.”

Phillips is only available to pinch-run today.

“I anticipate three or four days,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said.

The good news was the forearm wasn’t broken.

“It would have been tougher to not have Brandon,” Baker said. “We were worried it might be broken or a hairline fracture. Fortunate for Brandon he has good bones, good genes. We feel fortunate even though it’s frustrating. Hopefully, we’ll have Brandon back in a few days. It would have been really, really devastating to be without Brandon.”

Yesterday was the third time Phillips has been hit in four days.

“Sometimes, it can’t be avoided,” Baker said. “There are other times, you wish guys could get out of the way better. Yesterday was tough. That ball was like a heat-seeking missile. No matter where you go it’s coming right at you. Yesterday was tough.”
