Silverton village leaders may disband the police department, and expand a contract with the Hamilton County sheriff. The village had ten police officers up to two years ago. But that number is down to five because of retirements and resignations.
Village Manager Tom Carroll says the department could be reconstituted. Deputies already assist in village patrols, and that arrangement could continue. Or, the service could be contracted out entirely to the sheriff's department.
The village has scheduled public hearings to talk about the matter. The first is March 3 at 7 p.m. The second is March 12 at 7 p.m. Both hearings will be in the Silverton Paideia School cafeteria.
Residents can contact the village manager. They can also address village council during regular meetings at the Silverton Municipal Building.
