Two American teammates prevented Nick Goepper from becoming the first Olympic Winter Games gold medalist in slopestyle.
But a bronze medal represented a landmark achievement for a skier who grew up not in the mountains, but on the Indiana prairie.
Goepper, 19, Lawrenceburg, finished third today at Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, in the first slopestyle competition held at a Winter Olympics.
Gold went to Joss Christensen, 22, Park City, Utah, and silver to Gus Kenworthy, 22, Telluride, Colo.
It was only the third podium sweep ever by the United States at a Winter Olympics. The others: 1956 men's figure skating and 2002 men's snowboarding halfpipe.
