Roger Federer claimed his sixth Western & Southern Open title and 80th career tournament title with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over David Ferrer on Sunday.
Federer lost a challenge in the final game of the third set that would have given him the victory, but on the next point Ferrer hit a forehand that was called out before the chair umpire corrected it in. Federer then challenged the call and the replay system showed the ball was just out, as Federer raised his arm in celebration at winning the match and the tournament.
It was the 16th time Ferrer had faced Federer, and this result was the same as the previous 15.
The two met in the semifinals last week in Toronto -- with Ferrer also taking the second set there -- before Federer defeated him 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Federer also defeated him here in 2009 in the round of 16 in yet another three-set match. It was the sixth of their 16 match ups that went three sets.
