City to Spend $2 Million on New Parking Meters

City to Spend $2 Million on New Parking Meters

( Cincinnati ) -- The city will spend nearly $2 million to replace old coin-only parking meters with those that take coins, and credit and debit cards.  The plan is scaled back from a proposal from Mayor John Cranley that would have upgraded the parking system, expanded hours, and raised rates.

The move to replace meters comes as thieves have been breaking into existing meters for the change inside.

Councilman Christopher Smitherman says it's important as they face a tough budget.  He says with broken meters, the City loses revenue.  But Council member Yvette Simpson is worried that the new meters will also be targeted, and within months, Council will have to authorize buying more replacements.
