Bengals sign HB Peerman

The Bengals today signed HB Cedric Peerman, a fourth-year pro for 2013 who posted career-best offensive numbers in 2012 while maintaining his role as a key special teams player. Peerman’s prior Bengals contract had been set to expire this Monday.

Also, the Bengals have extended tender offers to three other players whose Cincinnati contracts from 2012 are set to expire Monday.

S Jeromy Miles, a fourth-year player for ’13, was issued a tender that, barring a new agreement with Cincinnati, will make him a restricted free agent (RFA) when free agency opens next Tuesday. WR Andrew Hawkins and LB Vincent Rey, both third-year players in ’13, have been issued tenders which assure the Bengals will retain their exclusive NFL rights for the upcoming season.

“It’s great to have Cedric’s situation wrapped up; he’s a smart and productive player who keeps getting better for us,” said head coach Marvin Lewis. “And the guys we’ve tendered have also contributed to us reaching the playoffs each of the last two years. They are players we want to retain, and this (tender process) is a step in that direction.”

Peerman (5-10, 211; Virginia) posted a 7.2-yard rushing average last season, with a 36-for-258 total that included two long runs for key first downs as the upback on fake punts. Both runs proved to be key plays in Bengals victories. Even discounting the 80 yards Peerman gained on those two plays, his rushing numbers with the regular offense (34-for-178, 5.2 avg.) were impressive. He also had nine receptions for 85 yards and finished fourth on the special teams in tackles (nine).

As an RFA, Miles will have the right to negotiate with other teams, but the Bengals will have the right to retain him by matching any signed offer. An RFA can remain with his original team by signing the one-year tender, or by negotiating a longer-term contract with his club.

The deadline for a restricted free agent to sign an offer sheet from another team is April 19. Any RFA who has not signed an offer sheet by that date will have his 2013 NFL rights revert exclusively to his 2012 club.

Miles was second on the special teams in tackles (12) last season, and he had a career-best 15 tackles on defense.

As exclusive-rights players, Hawkins and Rey also have the option of signing the tender offer or negotiating a longer-term contract with Cincinnati.

Hawkins was the No. 1 slot WR for the Bengals last season, ranking third on the team in receptions (51) and receiving yards (533) while scoring four touchdowns.

Rey played in every game with one start in ’12, logging 18 tackles on defense and 12 (tied for third place) on special teams.
